Background of the Study
Financial management in healthcare is crucial for ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently to meet the needs of patients and staff. Public healthcare institutions, particularly government hospitals in Gombe State, face significant financial challenges, including inadequate funding, inefficient allocation of resources, and mismanagement of available funds. These challenges are often exacerbated by a lack of proper financial planning, weak governance structures, and insufficient transparency in the management of public funds. As a result, the ability of these hospitals to provide quality healthcare services is compromised, affecting patient care and the operational efficiency of the institutions.
In Gombe State, government hospitals serve a large proportion of the population, including rural areas where access to healthcare is limited. However, the financial management practices in these hospitals have not been thoroughly assessed, and there is a gap in research regarding how financial resources are managed and whether this affects the quality of healthcare services. Poor financial management can lead to delays in purchasing medical supplies, underpaid staff, inadequate infrastructure, and poor healthcare delivery.
This study will evaluate the financial management practices in government hospitals in Gombe State, with a focus on identifying the strengths and weaknesses in financial planning, resource allocation, and financial oversight. The goal is to provide recommendations for improving financial practices to enhance the sustainability and effectiveness of healthcare services in the state.
Statement of the Problem
Government hospitals in Gombe State face serious financial constraints, which undermine their ability to deliver quality healthcare services. Financial mismanagement, lack of transparency, and inefficient use of funds have contributed to inadequate infrastructure, shortages of medical supplies, and low staff morale. These financial challenges not only affect the operational efficiency of the hospitals but also lead to a reduction in the quality of care provided to patients. While financial management is crucial to the functioning of healthcare institutions, there is limited research focusing on the specific financial management challenges faced by government hospitals in Gombe State. This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the current financial management practices and identifying areas for improvement.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will be limited to public hospitals in the state and will not extend to private hospitals or clinics. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining accurate financial data from hospitals due to concerns over confidentiality, as well as potential biases in responses from hospital staff.
